The Bread Room Bakery from Ellen Yin’s High Street Hospitality Group Opens
The Bread Room, from James Beard Foundation Award-winning restaurateur Ellen Yin and the team at High Street Hospitality Group, is opening on October 14, 2025, at 834 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia’s Center City. The Bread Room is an innovative new bakery, workshop, and event space showcasing the next chapter of baking expertise from the talented team.
Under the leadership of sibling restaurant High Street’s Executive Chef Christina McKeough and Head Baker Kyle Wood, The Bread Room will deliver a daily drop of more than 20 handmade viennoiseries and baked goods, blending classic and modern techniques.
The menu is set to include sweet and savory twists on beloved classics, with highlights including:
–Matcha Croissant, an S-shaped croissant with earthy matcha pastry cream
–Smoked Vanilla and Rosemary Cream Tartlet
–Pop-Tart riffs with flavors like Last Summer’s Blueberry- Blue Basil
–Rotating Crullers like Tahini-Honeycomb and Candied Fennel
–Flaky Biscuits with Herb and Parmesan or Bacon and Cheese
–Savory Shakshuka Danish and Fromage Blanc Danish with everything spice
Hearty sandwiches such as Black Lime Chicken Salad and Chili Crunch on Ciabatta, Muffalettas on Sesame Focaccia, Ham & Pickle Butter on a Demi Baguette, Tuna Nicoise Hoagie, Pastrami on Rye Croissants
In addition to a wide selection of pastries, The Bread Room will also feature a daily lineup of High Street’s signature whole grain sourdough loaves. This fall, the Bread Room will also debut a fresh-milled local grain miche, a large country-style loaf made with whole wheat and white flour (served by the pound).
Beyond daytime bakery operations, The Bread Room will transform into a community-driven workshop in the evenings, offering hands-on baking classes. Programming occurs weekly, including multi-level classes such as bread baking (sourdough, baguette, brioche, babka, focaccia, soft pretzels, bagels) to pizza making and pastry classes (viennoiserie, cakes, pies, cookies, buche de noel, croque en bouche). A visiting baker’s series with acclaimed chef hosts will be announced. Children’s classes will also be available on a regular basis, as well as private classes available upon request. Holiday baking classes for kids and adults will be available to book ahead of the holiday season. The space is also available for private events such as showers, receptions, and other corporate, community, or personal gatherings.
“Bakeries are historically a gathering place for communities – whether it’s grabbing a cup of coffee on your way to work, a place to randomly run into your neighbors, saying hello to the barista who remembers your order or even a place where like-minded individuals might meet – bakeries connect people. We’re all craving a little connection these days,” says Ellen Yin, Founder and Co-Owner of High Street Hospitality Group. “Our workshops and classes further this sentiment, and we’re eager to share our expertise with our community.”
The Bread Room offers an intimate 19-seat setting crafted by longtime collaborator Meg Rodgers of Marguerite Rodgers Interior Design. The space balances rustic charm with industrial character, warmed by natural light pouring through expansive windows beneath 14-foot ceilings. Anchoring the room is a bold six-foot by eight-foot abstract painting by Kevin O’Brien Studios — once a fixture in Fork’s private dining room — whose rich greens and rust tones echo across the walls. Guests gather around a communal table once owned by Dr. Albert Barnes, the celebrated Philadelphia art collector and pharmaceutical scientist, infusing the dining experience with history. Refurbished wooden benches and a recessed vintage bread cabinet displaying retail items complete the bakery’s design.
The Bread Room represents the latest addition to High Street Hospitality Group’s portfolio of acclaimed Philadelphia dining concepts, continuing Yin’s commitment to community-focused hospitality and culinary excellence.
The Bread Room is located at 834 Chestnut St (Chestnut between 8th & 9th), Philadelphia, PA 19107. It’s open Monday-Friday 7am-4pm; Saturday-Sunday 8am-3pm.
