Pho Ga Thanh Thanh Finds a New Home in Northeast Philadelphia

by Courtney Dunn

Pho Ga Thanh Thanh has found a new home in Northeast Philadelphia, but its story began back in 2001 in Kensington, where Hoa Le perfected the art of chicken pho and built a legacy that continues to this day. That legacy lives on through her daughter, Elizabeth Nguyen, who maintains the same commitment to quality and consistency, feeding her customers the same way she feeds herself.

Elizabeth is also making her own mark, finding new ways to innovate the menu while holding onto the beloved classics. On the horizon is a matcha bar by the entrance featuring ceremonial-grade matcha, continuing the restaurant’s tradition of top quality. Fun and tasty cold foam options will be available, from cream cheese to tiramisu, along with seasonal flavors like pumpkin.

She’s taking the concept a step further by adding banh mi to the menu, with plans to serve shredded chicken, grilled pork, and a special deli meat combo, making the restaurant an ideal grab-and-go spot. For those who prefer to dine in, don’t worry; they have a large dining room with plenty of seating.

When it comes to Pho Ga, go bone-in for the most authentic experience. The broth is rich and savory, packed with deep chicken flavor and Vietnamese spices. Served on the side is their tangy and spicy signature sauce made with lime leaves and habanero, adding a subtle kick to each bite. It’s a bowl so good that guests come from out of state just for it. The addition of banh mi is also a thank you to those traveling from afar, giving them something to take along for the journey home.

Another highlight is the chicken and rice dishes, where you can choose between steamed or fried chicken thigh paired with rice blanched in chicken broth, carrying that same deep flavor from the pho. In contrast, one of Elizabeth’s favorite dishes is Goi Ga, a refreshing Vietnamese chicken salad made with shredded chicken, cabbage, and herbs. No matter which dish you choose, the care put into each dish can be found throughout the menu.

It’s that care that keeps customers coming back and continues to bring in new ones. Looking ahead, Elizabeth is interested in exploring opportunities to expand out of state, but for now, Northeast Philadelphia is where they plan to stay. In Elizabeth’s words, they’ll be whisking up happiness, one dish at a time.
