Mixteca Brings Contemporary Mexican Cuisine and an Agave-Focused Cocktail Program to East Kensington

by Marilyn Johnson

Philadelphia’s restaurant scene is about to welcome another exciting newcomer as Mixteca prepares to open later this month in East Kensington, taking over the former Martha space at York and Martha Streets.

The concept comes from award-winning hospitality veterans Jeff Bell and Victor Lopez, whose New York City location has already earned acclaim for its elevated approach to Mexican food and agave spirits.

Mixteca Philly is opening by end of August

Mixteca is designed as a neighborhood agave bar and restaurant, putting tequila, mezcal, bacanora and raicilla front and center. The beverage program will feature ten different margarita variations alongside agave-inspired takes on classic cocktails. Guests looking to skip the alcohol won’t be left out either, as the bar will offer an extensive selection of thoughtfully crafted zero-proof drinks.

The kitchen will showcase contemporary Mexican cuisine built around fresh ingredients and handmade corn tortillas. The opening menu is expected to include dishes such as hamachi ceviche, Yucatán shrimp tacos and family-style pork al pastor, blending traditional Mexican flavors with modern presentation.

The approximately 100-seat restaurant has been designed to serve a variety of occasions, with a full bar, comfortable lounge seating, an outdoor patio and a private mezzanine for special events and gatherings. After opening, the team also plans to introduce a margarita-focused happy hour along with community events and neighborhood programming.

Mixteca first debuted in New York City’s West Village in 2025 before Bell and Lopez selected Philadelphia for their second location. The East Kensington restaurant replaces the beloved Martha, which closed in late 2024 after a decade in the neighborhood.

With its combination of handcrafted cocktails, modern Mexican cuisine and inviting atmosphere, Mixteca looks poised to become one of the neighborhood’s most anticipated dining and drinking destinations this summer at 2113 East York Street.
